Buckeye Lake Pub Paddle: Spend day out on the water visiting pubs

As a summertime activity, the Buckeye Lake Pub Paddle has it all: fresh air, beautiful scenery, healthy exercise and a chance to imbibe at a handful of local pubs.

The Paddle, which raises money for Millersport Elementary School, has been an annual event since 2017, with participants paddling their kayaks or other non-motorized boats from pub to pub around Buckeye Lake.

It started off small — and cold.

“The first year, we had it on Labor Day weekend. There were whitecaps on the lake and it was 60 degrees. People had their winter hats on. There were only 20 of us,” said Christie Torchia, the event's organizer.

The next year, the event moved to August, and since then, attendance has picked up considerably. It kept going even during COVID.

“I thought about canceling in 2020,” Torchia said. “But then I thought, we're all going to be in boats, and we're all outside, we're not going to be breathing on each other. I thought it was going to be a really small crowd, but that was actually our biggest year. We had over 200 boats. I think everyone was so anxious to get out and do something.”

Torchia encourages anyone interested to give it a try.

“It's an easy, breezy day, supporting an awesome charity.”
