FosterAdopt Connect is asking for the community’s help to fill more than 900 backpacks with school supplies to give to foster kids across the Kansas City area.

The organization will begin handing out supplies Saturday morning at its back-to-school event, but they still need about 300 more backpacks.

Kelly Cain is the director of volunteer engagement and special projects for FosterAdopt Connect. She said they are seeing a 20% increase in the number of foster kids in need of school supplies compared to last year.

"They are kids that have come from some difficult challenging backgrounds," Cain said. "The goal of our program is to help send them to school with the supplies they need, so that they're confident going into school."

Every backpack will be filled with basic school supplies. Kids will also have the opportunity to grab hygiene products, socks and underwear.

Cain said the kids are always very excited to come and get a new backpack.

"I think kids are our future and making a little bit of an impact for them to start a school year on the right foot could change the trajectory of their life. It's going to make them feel good. It's going to give them the confidence boost they need to be successful," Cain said.

She said for a lot of kids, this could be the first time that they are getting brand new school supplies.

"For a foster kid, that's a huge thing — a brand-new backpack. Getting to have something that they own, that they have picked out, they have chosen that is now theirs to keep no matter where they're at, is huge," Cain said.

She said she is excited to see the smiles on the kids' faces as they come to grab their supplies.
