In a post going viral on social media, the internet has slammed a man for telling his coworker to cover up her shoulders while working in the office.

Published to Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole forum, a woman under the anonymous username u/Longjumping_Draw_964 shared her story to get the opinions of the "AITA" community. The popular post has over 8,000 upvotes and 800 comments.

The Redditor began her story by explaining how her workplace has a lenient dress code where many people dress very casually. She wrote that she was wearing a tank top with thin straps and long pants. Throughout the day, she noticed that her coworker, "Brian," was giving her mean looks. When she confronted him about it, he complained about her work attire, saying she had "barely any clothes" on.

However, Brian typically doesn't wear shoes while working. He puts on sandals when he goes to the bathroom or the kitchen. The Redditor took note that at the time, he was wearing short shorts as well.

"I told Brian that I will start covering up my shoulders when he starts wearing shoes to the office. If I have to watch his hairy toes at work, he can deal with the sight of my shoulders," the original poster (OP) wrote.

"That of course didn't help, he put on his headphones and didn't even look in my direction the rest of the workday. Now I'm wondering if I was wrong to say that. He is a coworker and I should thrive for good work relationships, but I felt insulted so kicked back at him," she concluded.

Many businesses have a variety of dress code rules for their employees. While some are more lenient than others, what are the typical and professional ways to dress when heading to work?

Business professional is the most conservative office dress code, according to Masterclass.com. Typical clothes include suits or pantsuits with a button-down shirt and a tie, pencil skirts and blazers. These types of clothes should be tailored well. Flats, heels or loafers are fitting to wear on your feet.

Business casual is less strict. Per thebalancecareers.com, typical articles of clothing allowed in this dress code are blouses, sweaters, closed-toe and dress shoes, dark socks, slacks, skirts, and cotton long-sleeved shirts.
