LOGANTON — The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School’s 10th grade class of 2025 recently held a fundraiser of “sock-tacular” proportion to raise money for their class account.

School fundraising campaigns can range from selling items from gift catalogs, to car washes, to public dinners, and everything in between, but for these sophomores they have taken a real “feet-on” approach, and are selling hand-dyed socks in school colors.

The unique fundraiser was inspired by their friend in the grade below them, Jesse Homan, class of 2026, who loves socks. He enjoys using them in creative ways, often to show happiness or to tell a story, and they have become his trademark around the SVRCS campus.

A year ago, when he and his Mom, Rachel, attended a girl’s volleyball game, sophomore advisor Kim Corl noticed that Jesse, who is in ninth grade at the school, was using his socks to cheer on the team, waving them in the air with great joy.

This reminded Mrs. Corl of the Steelers’ rally symbol, the “Terrible Towel” and she felt that maybe the 10th grade class could sell socks to use in the same way, while celebrating Jesse’s unique love for them.

She ran it past the sophomores as a potential fundraiser and they voted unanimouly in favor, and thus the “SVRCS Super Sock” was born.

According to those helping with the fundraiser, “class officers and a few classmates have been joining Mrs. Corl as they tie dye each sock two shades of green, along with creating screens through a thermofax machine to screen fabric-ink fusing the SV logo and Phoenix carefully onto each sock. The logos then have to be hand-dried on high heat using a hair dryer.”

To promote the Super Socks, Jesse posed with the school mascot — the SVRCS Phoenix, while holding a pair of the socks, at the start of the first 2022 volleyball home game, and was the star of the show.

The Super Socks are $5 a pair, and can be purchased by SVRCS students and school staff during school hours in the main office, and at all home volleyball games. Each pair comes with a description of the Super Socks along with care instructions.

Supplies are limited though. The class made 288 pairs of socks and so far, they are hot sellers.

SVRCS 2025 class officers are as follows, President: Bryer Martin; Vice President, Olivia Clester; Secretary, Isabella Culvey; Treasurer, Lincoln Breon; Fundraising Chairperson, Madison Calhoun.
