A small plane has crashed in the ocean just off Huntington Beach during a lifeguarding competition. A Coast Guard spokesperson says the pilot was rescued after the plane went into the ocean about 30 yards from shore on Friday. He was the only person aboard. Video posted online shows the plane was towing a banner as it fell. People carrying surfboards immediately rushed toward the aircraft moments after it hit. The crash occurred during events for the 2022 California Surf Lifesaving Association Junior Lifeguard Championship. Federal Aviation Administration records show that the plane is a fixed-wing single-engine aircraft registered to Van Wagner Aerial Media, a national airplane advertising company.
Kodak Black was placed under house arrest Thursday after appearing Wednesday before Southern District of Florida Judge Jonathan Goodman via teleconference and paying bond.
Authorities say a car driving on the wrong side of a two-lane highway in East Texas early Friday collided with an SUV, killing all five people in the vehicles. The Texas Department of Public Safety says the collision happened around 5 a.m. Friday on Texas highway 110 about 6 1/2 miles northwest of Tyler and 85 miles east of Dallas. Sgt. Jason Bundy says a Dodge Charger was on the wrong side of the unlit highway and erupted into flames after rounding a curve and slamming head-on into a Chevrolet Tahoe. Gerardo Lopez, who lives nearby, told Tyler television station KLTV that he tried to extinguish a fire in the car but couldn't and that a man was screaming.

Miami Marlins All-Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. likely will be out through the end of August. The Marlins said Friday that tests revealed Chisholm has a stress reaction in his lower back. He is expected to miss six weeks. The 24-year-old Chisholm was selected to the National League All-Star team for the first time in his career. However, he was forced to miss Tuesday’s game at Los Angeles. Chisholm has been on the injured list since June 29 with what was called a right lower back strain.
World Wrestling Entertainment impresario Vince McMahon says he is retiring. In a brief statement issued by the company Friday, McMahon said he is retiring as WWE's chairman and CEO. He noted that he remains its majority shareholder. McMahon stepped down temporarily as CEO and chairman of WWE in mid-June during an an investigation into alleged misconduct. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported McMahon agreed to pay more than $12 million over the past 16 years to suppress allegations of sexual misconduct and infidelity.
Kentucky Treasurer Allison Ball has announced that she will run for state auditor next year. The Republican is finishing a second term as state treasurer. Ball said in a campaign release Friday that she has delivered on her “promise to serve as a watchdog of taxpayer dollars.” Ball says as treasurer, her office returned $142 million in unclaimed property to Kentuckians. Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon, also finishing his second term, is running for governor next year.
CHICAGO — Filming on the Chicago set of “Justified: City Primeval” starring Timothy Olyphant has been halted until Monday after “two cars whose occupants were engaged in a gunfight smashed through the show’s barricades” earlier this week, according to reporting by Deadline.
The state of Georgia and local governments are giving Hyundai Motor Group incentives worth $1.8 billion to build electric vehicles in the state. That's according to the signed agreement disclosed by state officials Friday. The company announced in May that it will invest $5.5 billion in its first U.S. plant dedicated to electric vehicles near Savannah. It's the largest economic development deal in Georgia's history, with a promise of creating 8,100 direct jobs. State officials for the first time Friday disclosed tax breaks and other incentives being given to close the deal with Hyundai. The package comes to nearly $228,000 per job.
Kyle Larson was the start of a Grand Prix in Philadelphia run by the Urban Youth Racing School. Larson might seem an unlikely ambassador in the wake of his 2020 suspension for using a slur during an iRacing event that cost him his ride driving for Chip Ganassi. Larson has grown tight with the program and throw himself into helping out. The entire Hendrick Motorsports fleet of Larson, Chase Elliott, William Byron and Alex Bowman were among a handful of NASCAR drivers that raced Friday at the UYRS Grand Prix. Larson is looking for his second win this season when NASCAR heads this weekend to Pocono Raceway.

A southeastern Montana tribe has filed a lawsuit against the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs over a lack of law enforcement and jails on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. The lawsuit filed Tuesday says the U.S. government has failed to provide adequate law enforcement services on the reservation as violent crime and missing persons cases increase. It says the tribe has asked for more additional since at least 2018 because officers do not quickly respond to 911 calls, if they respond at all. An Interior Department spokesperson declined comment Friday on the lawsuit.

Murray has signed a long-term deal with the Arizona Cardinals that will keep him with the franchise through 2028. It could be worth up to $230.5 million. Most abortions will become illegal in Wyoming on Wednesday after Gov. Mark Gordon gave the go-ahead Friday under a new state law. The law bans abortions except in cases of rape or incest or to protect the mother’s life or health. The Wyoming Legislature approved the ban and Gordon signed it into law in March expecting that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade. That happened June 24. Wyoming's ban will now take effect after the state attorney general completed a review. The American Civil Liberties Union condemns the abortion ban. Gordon says he's a “pro-life governor” who will support children, mothers and families.
A federal judge has sided with two former Minneapolis police officers convicted of violating George Floyd’s civil rights, saying the guidelines for their sentences will be calculated in a way that could mean substantially less prison time for them. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson handed J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao a victory on Friday when he ruled that the complex formulas for calculating their sentences will be based on involuntary manslaughter, rather than murder, as a starting point. Magnuson will sentence the men in back-to-back hearings on Wednesday. It's still not clear exactly how much time the men could face, as other factors will also work into calculating the sentencing guidelines.
DETROIT — The U.S. Department of Education awarded more than $700,000 in emergency funds Friday to the Oxford Area Community School District in response to the mass shooting in November at Oxford High School.
The Tennessee Titans have only one draft pick still unsigned after agreeing to terms with cornerback Roger McCreary. The Titans report for training camp Tuesday with quarterback Malik Willis unsigned. He was their second selection in the third round at No. 86 overall out of Liberty. McCreary is from Mobile, Alabama, and was the 35th pick overall and went in the second round. He played in 43 games in four seasons at Auburn, where he had 135 career tackles, five interceptions, a sack and 10 tackles for loss. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound cornerback was a coaches’ pick for the All-Southeastern Conference team.

Mets manager Buck Showalter says deGrom felt good Friday and his next step will be a throwing session Sunday as part of a work day in New York. Health officials say two children have been diagnosed with monkeypox in the U.S. They are a toddler in California and an infant who is not a U.S. resident. That's according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday. The children are described as being in good health and receiving treatment. Officials think they might have gotten the virus through household transmission. Monkeypox is endemic in parts of Africa, but this year more than 15,000 cases have been reported in countries that historically don’t see the disease. In the U.S. and Europe, the vast majority of infections have happened in men who have sex with men, though health officials have stressed that anyone can catch the virus.
R. Kelly's manager has been convicted of threatening gunfire was about to occur at a crowded Manhattan theater preparing to show a documentary about the singer's sexual abuse of women and girls. The verdict in the case against Donnell Russell came Friday. In closing arguments, Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Pomerantz told jurors that evidence of his guilt was overwhelming. She said phone records proved a call in December 2018 to the small theater came from Russell's Chicago home after he'd spent the day trying to stop the documentary from being shown. Defense attorney Michael Freeman said there wasn't enough evidence to prove guilt.
West Virginia’s Vital Registration Office will be closed for sanitation Monday through Wednesday after staff tested positive for COVID-19. The Vital Registration Office is the state’s official repository of birth, death, marriage, and divorce records. A West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources spokesperson says the state plans to reopen the Charleston office on Thursday. State officials say residents can go to their county clerk’s office to access certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates. Records can also be requested by mail or online.

The Green Bay Packers’ revenues and profits soared above their pre-pandemic levels over the last year as they capitalized on the opportunity to play in full stadiums again. The Packers reported revenues of $579 million. That marks a 56% increase over its 2021 total of $371.1 million and a 14.2% rise over its 2020 totals of $506.9 million. The Packers had $501.3 million in expenses for a $77.7 million profit. Their total revenues and expenses for the year both set franchise records.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing why police officers in the town of Oakland kicked down a door and violently arrested a 25-year-old Black man accused of speeding and running a stop sign. Outrage about the arrest began to spread as video posted on social media showed officers chasing Brandon Calloway through the home on Saturday, attempting to stun him, and beating him bloody before dragging him away. An attorney for the family could not immediately be reached for comment. Calloway is charged with evading arrest, resisting a stop, disorderly conduct and speeding.
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy is expected to sign legislation to formally recognize tribes in the state. The Alaska Federation of Natives announced the bill signing would take place on Thursday. The timing was confirmed by a Dunleavy spokesperson. Supporters of the bill have called it an overdue step that would create opportunities for the state and tribes to work together. The measure is similar to an initiative that was slated to go before voters later this year. Initiatives that qualify for the ballot can be bumped if the Legislature passes substantially similar legislation first. Dunleavy spokesperson Shannon Mason says the bill “would eliminate the need for the ballot initiative.”

A federal judge in North Carolina has again ruled in favor of New Orleans Pelicans player Zion Williamson, this time in connection with a lawsuit he filed against a marketing agent two years ago in an attempt to break a contract. U.S. District Court Judge Loretta Biggs denied a number of motions filed by Prime Sports Marketing and Gina Ford, which entered an agreement to represent Williamson. The defendants were seeking to recover payment for the work they did for Williamson. Biggs denied multiple motions for summary judgment and to stay proceedings in the case regarding the contract. The court ruled previously that because neither the company nor the agent complied with North Carolina law, their agreement was void and unenforceable.
Former Notre Dame and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jim Lynch has died at the age of 76. Lynch’s family announced that he died Thursday but didn't provide a cause. Lynch helped the Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings in the 1970 Super Bowl after a standout career at Notre Dame. He wound up playing 11 seasons in the NFL, all in Kansas City. He finished his career with 17 interceptions, 18 sacks and 14 fumble recoveries. Lynch was inducted into the Chiefs' Hall of Fame in 1990 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
Police in Hawaii are investigating after a man’s left hand was severed by a sword at a Waikiki 7-Eleven. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responders were called to the convenience store just after midnight Friday. EMS spokesperson Shayne Enright says they found the man with a severed left hand. The 40-year-old man was taken in critical condition to a hospital. A tourist from Switzerland told Hawaii News Now he witnessed the attack and saw half the man's hand on the floor. The TV station reports police later arrested a 46-year-old man and launched an attempted murder investigation.
