It’s time to update your riding gear! These winter approved products will actually keep you warm

I like the old proverb very much, "There is no bad weather, only bad clothes". As the seasons changed and cold weather began to come, I learned to accept the cold. In winter, I usually ride outside three to four times a week-which is about the same as what I do in the warmer months. With the right equipment, riding in the cold may also be what you really look forward to. New technologies and innovative fabrics mean that you no longer need to deal with bulky insulation to keep warm. In addition, as companies adopt more realistic sizes, the seemingly endless selection of clothing should fit better.

This series of the best winter riding gear will help you choose the right clothes and dress appropriately. Your friends and family will still be shocked when they hear how cold you are cycling on weekends, but you will not remember the cold, but only how wonderful it is to be able to truly enjoy the mileage and time spent outdoors.

Pedal: The best winter cycling socks

As a bicycle photographer and former competitive bike cross-country and crit racer, I have been cycling through almost all weather conditions you can imagine for more than 10 years. Whether it's cycling in the wet Scottish Highlands or training in the cold northeast winter near my hometown in Philadelphia, I have never ridden it. After years of trial and error in the global cold climate, I have gained a good understanding of what works and what does not work.

The trick to riding in the cold is layering. Wearing multiple pieces of lighter clothing is more versatile than one large, bulky piece of clothing, because you can add or remove clothing to match conditions. In addition, multiple layers can better absorb body temperature between items, but still allow sweat to evaporate, so you can avoid getting wet from the inside out.

With proper layering, you can rest assured that no matter how cold outside, you will not freeze. Although some people can tolerate cold weather better than others, I find the following recommendations suitable for most cyclists:

Winter weather often brings precipitation. If your kit is soaked in the cold, not only is it unpleasant, but it can also become dangerous if any moisture starts to freeze and pose a risk of frostbite. Having a good set of fenders can greatly prevent road spray from soaking your feet and back. A high-quality raincoat with Gore-Tex or similar waterproof and breathable structure will prevent your core from getting wet and overheating. Finally, avoid wearing cotton cloth on wet days; it does not retain heat when wet like Merino wool, it is naturally warm, breathable and deodorant.

The bicycle test team spent many cold days in the cold days-on the road, on the road, in the dark, at dawn-through wind, rain, sleet and polar vortex, so that winter bicycle equipment and clothing can adapt to them pace of. Combining my own experience of riding and surviving in the worst winters, we tested and used most of the products on this list. For any project that we haven't tried, we rely on our decades of collective expertise to determine which projects are worth investing in, no matter how big or small. This is the equipment that keeps us warm, dry and safe, and this is what we know it can do the same for you.

The only skin exposed in Gore's balaclava can be worn with a pair of sunglasses-everything else is protected. Gore Windstopper fabric, a thin material, not only prevents the penetration of cold wind, but also prevents body heat from escaping, keeping us warm on the forehead and ears where it really matters. The vents in the nose and mouth increase breathability and minimize overheating, but can still make people feel claustrophobic sometimes. The waterproof stretch fabric fits snugly without restricting movement, and reflective details add a touch of visibility.

This sleeveless bottom layer is made of Primaloft's Alpha insulation material-the same material used in some of our favorite insulated jackets and vests. It is very light, soft and comfortable. Even so, it still has excellent insulation properties (and retains them when wet), is hygroscopic and dries very quickly, so it does not become heavy and damp like wool. It rarely feels clammy on our skin. Alpha doesn't look like much, but we were surprised at how effective this piece is in keeping our core warm and dry, and how well it improves overall comfort in various weather conditions and temperature ranges. If you are riding in cool to cold weather, you will want this in your closet.

These knitted waterproof gloves may be your best investment of $45 to upgrade your winter riding gear. They have the feel of a medium-weight glove and are sufficiently insulating to be used at temperatures hovering around freezing points. Even better, our hands did not get hot and sweat when the mercury rose. As the name suggests, they are also waterproof. If you are the kind of person who doesn't like to give up riding opportunities, no matter what the weather is, these gloves can prevent your hands from becoming a weakness in cold and rainy days.

These windproof shoe covers are as hardcore as you are riding in the cold. The waterproof tape seams keep our feet dry, and the flannel adds warmth. In addition, they have an adjustable hook and loop closure system that is easy to adjust and remove.

Ready for your toughest winter ride, this three-layered garment is designed to keep you warm and dry when sweating in cold conditions. (If you really need a time interval, you should still wear a base layer to absorb sweat.) Although it can keep warm, this lightweight fabric still maintains a slim profile. FR-C Pro Lyte is windproof and waterproof. The interior of the collar is lined with brushed material, which fits your chin softly, and the side panels and waist are made of more breathable and flexible fabrics. The designer of Giordana products took into account the annoying sleeve and glove joints, and designed the cuffs to be beautiful and straight to fit your favorite lobster claws. Reflective piping on the waist and upper arms improves your visibility, and a smaller zipper pocket keeps valuables comfortable.

The French brand Decathlon quickly became popular in the United States for good reasons-its clothing and equipment are of high quality and reasonable prices. This jacket is especially suitable for long-distance riding in cold weather: the brushed interior and waterproof, breathable exterior keep us comfortable in cold and humid environments, and the extra-long back hem provides plenty of extra coverage.

C3 is rich in functions. These seamless bib leggings feature Gore men’s special suede and Windstopper Cup technology, a pre-formed windproof front crotch. Articulated knees improve fit, reflective details improve visibility, and the mesh on the back of the leggings prevents overheating. The fleece lining feels soft on the skin and folds up at the knees.

Velocio's Zero bib leggings have a variety of functions, making your riding in cold weather very enjoyable. The front of the leg is made of a very elastic and compression-resistant soft shell fabric to provide excellent wind resistance, while the ultra-fine fleece backing provides warmth. The Thermo Roubaix fabric on the back of the legs and the seat keeps you warm while letting your legs breathe. Stirrup straps on the feet help prevent the legs from lifting. We are loyal fans of Velocio known for the wider straps on its bibs. One of our favorite features is the FlyFree design, which allows to rest in nature without having to remove or unzip the upper zipper, which is a godsend in winter.

Except for the coldest days, headbands are a great way to balance warmth and breathability. Smartwool’s headband provides a windproof front panel that can withstand bad weather while also allowing your head to breathe. The merino wool structure also keeps you warm when you happen to get wet. The slim fit keeps you comfortable under the helmet, and you will hardly remember that you are wearing anything extra.

On cold days, this Merino hat from Ornot has a dual function, as a comfortable winter hat as well as a traditional riding hat. The ultra-thin but unexpectedly warm merino wool structure almost disappears under your helmet and is very comfortable. The extended sides and back also help protect your ears and neck.

There is nothing worse than going home from get off work, ready to go for a winter night ride and find that the lights are out of power. According to Blackburn, Countdown 1600 can be quickly charged to 80% in 10 minutes. So please rest assured, even if you forget to charge in advance, you can still ride the car. This powerful lamp has six modes and can output up to 1600 lumens in more than an hour. But we found that the 600 lumens setting can last up to four hours, and everything else is great except for the fast downhill mountain biking part. We like digital timers, no need to guess how much running time we have left. The included universal handlebar bracket is also suitable for off-road use.

Generally, winter gloves may be too warm and bulky, causing your hands to sweat, and then they will become cold when the sweat freezes. This is why we are big fans of the layering concept used in the Dissent 133 Ultimate glove system. The initial cost is a bit high, but you will get four complete sets of gloves that can work together to protect you. This suit has 11 different mix and match combinations, covering the entire process from early autumn to late winter. We like to put the waterproof glove layer in a sweatshirt pocket or bar bag for those unexpected winter rains. We found that all combinations breathe very well, so we never have wet hands or sweating. The entire system is housed in a cute box, and it can also easily track all four pairs.

Although the frame bag or any bicycle bag related to this may not be at the top of your winter gear list, we think it should be. This model from Post Carry Co. is an excellent place to store snacks, extra dry gloves, or store one floor when the weather gets warmer. Its ample storage space, divided into large pockets and small pockets, makes it an excellent companion for long-distance riding in winter, but it is still small enough that you can use two bottles. According to our experience, this backpack is obviously more aerodynamic than traditional handlebar bags and is easier to access when riding. The waterproof exterior easily gets rid of winter spray. Available in three sizes and a variety of shoulder strap lengths, this backpack fits almost all bicycles.

Versatility is a must for winter cycling clothing, because the weather changes throughout the day, and Castelli's Alpha RoS 2 jacket fully meets the requirements. Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper 150 fabric has the windproof properties we have seen without sacrificing breathability. The durable waterproof coating helps remove water and road spray. Its unique double-layer structure consists of a built-in warm sweater with an independent zipper, so you can get all the protection you need even on the coldest days. When the temperature drops below the freezing point, our testers only need a thin base layer. We appreciate that this jacket includes the standard three back pocket layout, which is usually not found on most winter jackets. There is also an additional waterproof zippered side pocket to store your mobile phone or other valuables.

Winter usually has some wet weather. These Raceblade Pro XL fenders from SKS do an excellent job of preventing road splashes on your body and bicycle. The large area coverage of the rear fender also prevents our cycling partners from being sprayed. These do not require mudguard brackets and can be installed on almost any road or gravel bicycle. With the ability to quickly install or remove these fenders, you will not be trapped in a state where you must maintain them when the weather gets dry. They are suitable for rim brakes and disc brakes, and are suitable for tires up to 32 mm.

Although this helmet is not a winter helmet, we think it is one of the versatile options for riding in cold weather. Falconer II has what Sweet Protection calls Aerocovers. These magnetic covers snap onto the ventilation holes. They were originally designed to improve aerodynamic performance, but we found that they provide excellent wind protection in colder weather. If the weather gets warm during the ride, the lid is also easy to pop out and put away. Even with the cover in place, the breathability of the back of the helmet is very good. With MIPS technology, excellent adjustability and very comfortable to wear or without a winter hat, this helmet is one of our favorite cold weather options.

Ruckus sunglasses from Smith are equipped with photochromic lenses to help cope with the changing light conditions during winter riding. The glasses have 20-85% visible light transmittance, whether you are riding before dawn or out in a cloudless winter afternoon, this glasses perform well. The transition time is fast and always seems to provide just the right amount of shading. The lens size provides a wide range of coverage, unlike ski goggles. There is only a very small frame on the upper part of the glasses, and there is no blind spot even when checking the back. Smith's Pivlock technology is a magnetic quick-change lens system that makes changing lenses very simple and fast, so you will always have the correct coverage for every condition.

When the weather really gets cold, the feet are one of the first parts of the body to become numb. Shoe covers are great for the shoulder season, but when the cold really hits, nothing can compare to proper winter shoes. Fizik found the perfect balance of warmth, performance and comfort in its Artica R5 shoes. Thanks to technologies such as foil-lined insoles that reflect heat, carbon composite soles that improve power transmission, and a completely waterproof outer layer, our feet are as happy as possible. We only need a thin woolen socks to keep warm. Even with hard work, our feet have never been wet. The fast lacing system makes getting on and off the car a breeze and minimizes the weight.

Most cycling shoes are well ventilated, which is the opposite of what you want when the mercury drops-especially when the wind is up. You can choose insulated (and heavier) winter shoes or boots, or you can continue to wear your favorite shoes with a good coat. These neoprene overshoes by Endura are one of the warmest overshoes we have ever used: they are like puffy jackets for your feet. Therefore, they are a bit bulky (expect them to rub against your crank arm). But with these, you will have warmer, lighter, and more comfortable shoes—for less money—and more comfortable than if you paid for a special set of winter kicks.

Use the cold weather riding equipment recommended by these experts, including hats, jackets and accessories, to make winter riding tolerable and even fun.

The troubled Japanese technology group Toshiba said on Friday that it is restructuring to improve competitiveness and divesting its energy infrastructure and computer equipment businesses.
