When Dr. James Yakel saw homeless people standing near 21st Street and Main Street, he thought how cold their feet must be.

"I have been reading about the number of homeless people in Longmont," Jacques said. "I see them all the time, and you will see some of their shoes when they walk, they walk on something that looks like cardboard."

Yakel has owned the Colorado Podiatry Sports Medicine Center in Longmont for about eight years and knows the importance of protecting feet from cold weather to prevent frostbite.

In order to help the homeless stay warm this winter, he cooperated with Brown's Shoe Fit and Homeless Outreach to provide encouragement, and organized the first boot event for HOPE Drive, collecting soft-used winter boots, work boots and new socks for men and women. . The donation will go to HOPE, a non-profit organization that provides services and resources for the homeless.

Those who want to make donations can deliver them to Brown's Shoe Fit at 373 Main St from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. From Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, Colorado Podiatry Sports Medicine Center also provides a collection box, 1551 Professional Lane, Suite 160. The event started on October 25th and lasted until November 29th.

So far, the drive has collected approximately 34 pairs of shoes. Yakel's goal is 50 pairs.

"It's really good," Yaker said. "The response from the community is really good. People donated a lot of good quality boots."

In Brown's Shoe Fit on Tuesday, there are two shoe collection boxes near the cash register. Managing partner Jason Wetzel said that donations are received every week, and these donation boxes have been filled two or three times.

"The response was very good," Wetzel said. "We have such a generous and caring community. We know that with the advent of winter and cold months, it is very important for the homeless to have shoes suitable for this situation."

HOPE volunteer and outreach director Andy Schwartz (Andy Schwartz) said that homeless people spend most of their time outside. Schwartz said that many of them wear tennis shoes, which cannot protect their feet from the cold and wet weather.

"Boots mean dry, warm feet," Schwartz said. "The boots we get will greatly help protect people's toes from frostbite and keep other parts of the body warm."

Schwartz said the shoes and socks will be distributed during the street campaign and will be provided to those who visit non-profits for resources.

He added that many homeless people need a pair of good shoes to walk to work or do day labor.

Schwartz said: "This helps them move to these jobs and keep them."

Yakel wants to turn the startup drive into an annual event, and he encourages people to contribute.

"This is to give back to Longmont and the homeless here," Yaker said. "Keep in mind the homeless and support our shelters in town by donating a pair of boots, shoes or socks-anything they can provide."
