Report: No deal imminent for Colin Kaepernick, Raiders - ProFootballTalk

2022-05-29 02:44:52 By : Ms. zhou Allen

The Colin Kaepernick workout with the Raiders, by all indications, went well. However, it doesn’t mean the Raiders will be adding him to the team any time soon.

Via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, no deal is imminent.

Per multiple reports, Kaepernick’s arm strength and conditioning were impressive. That should surprise no one. He’s been working out constantly over the past five years while waiting for a chance to show what he can do. Thus, his arm should be as strong as it always has been. He should be in great overall shape.

And just because the Raiders aren’t signing Kaepernick right now, it doesn’t mean they won’t. If they decide during OTAs or minicamp that any of the current backups aren’t good enough, he could be out and Kaepernick could be in.

Meanwhile, and as PFT reported on Thursday, two other teams were interested in Kaepernick before the Las Vegas workout. Will those teams now bring him in?

We’ll see. We’ll see if he gets more workouts. We’ll see if he gets a roster spot. We’ll see if he has a chance to practice in training camp or play in the preseason. We’ll see if one year as a backup does for him what it did for, say, Mitch Trubisky.

So no accuracy, can’t dissect plays and make proper adjustments. Nothing to see here. Anyone can throw a football far, just ask JaMarcus Russell.

He already showed what he could do. And the 49ers concluded that Blaine Gabbert could do it better.

all he would do is make fans mad

When it doesn’t work out what will be the newest excuse?

Hard to believe that it has been 6 years since he lost his starting job.

This guy lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert 6 years ago … enough said.

Lots of hate for Kaepernick. Sad. He did a couple of stupid things (pig socks), but blacklisting him for life? Sad commentary on our capacity to forgive

Clown hair has to go. Nobody wants to explain it in the team photo fifteen years from now.

im hoping this is just a stunt. He isn’t good enough to be on the roster. The End.

I know I am waiting anxiously to see what happens with this football player who hasn’t played a down of football in 5 years.

This is almost as bad as Urban Meyer bringing back Tim Tebow to try to play tight end. You can’t take a year or two off from NFL level football, let alone 5 years; the guy has no chance of getting to NFL shape.

Any team that signs him will be walking on eggshells shells from that moment on. They will have to deal with questions at every single press conference. They will have one contingent of fans screaming to let Kap start. Another contingent of fans will be against him. There will be an unending quarterback controversy no matter if he is a third string, 2nd, or the starter.

Yeah, good luck telling him he’s not getting signed… I’m sure he’ll take it well.

in the NFL you can be a distraction if you are a star player if you are a distaction and barely worthy of the bench, you won’t a jersey, doesn’t matter idf you are Joe Schmo or CK.. too many moving parts on a team to deal with irrelevant player

How many headlines is this gonna be? Let the guy go do his thing and then we will see how it comes out when its done. Perhaps if the media backs off that helps his chances?

Why would any team to get more press coverage for the circus that would come to town than their actual starting QB? He is a PR nightmare. Maybe he can go to the Canadian League and play? He hates America anyway

Game has passed him by. Years ago.

3rd string QB’s don’t take 6 years off and then state they can help a team. Like never.

The league already paid this grifter to go away once. Why would they want to do it again.

——————————————- Funny, but I was just thinking the same thing about Jon Gruden.

Cleveland? Look at it this way, with Deshaun and Baker on the roster Kaep could pretty much fly under the radar.

Making it all the more absurd is that as a backup he’d get very limited reps in practice. So, after 5 years off he’d only have camp and the preseason to get all the rust off. Then imagine he’s not needed until like Week 12 at which point he’s spent the last 3 months just standing around again.

Florio’s fascination with this guy is understandable as he truly believes that Kaep was blackballed, that he lost his starting job due to kneeling, that all he wants to do is play no matter what, no matter for who, and that he’s still an NFL caliber QB. If those things were true I’d feel exactly the same. Unfortunately none of that is true, Kaep did not lose his job due to kneeling, he lost it due to poor performance and a 1-10 record. He started his “protest” by sitting (sulking) and it had nothing to do with social justice at the time. He then refused to reduce his salary to play in Denver, blew up his Ravens deal, blew up his workout in Atlanta, and has now burned through any goodwill he had from the fans. Sadly Florio is about the only guy left who can’t see that even though his cause is commendable, the man himself is a fraud.

Colin has the skills to be a very good QB. He took the Niners to the NFC Championship Game one year and the Super Bowl another year. That’s NOT back-up QB play. It’s time to give the man a chance and see if he still has the skill. That being said, I’ve never thought he was very good at reading a defense.

Kaepernick in his prime , 6 years younger was literally a bottom 3 if not the worst starting QB in the NFL over his last two seasons playing. He was 2 wins and 16 losses in his last 18 starts because of his lack of QB talent. The only thing that kept Kaepernick from playing was his lack of skills & the only thing that kept Kaep from being on a roster was his grossly bloated view of his abilities and ego on being a bench warmer. 6 Years later and you can kiss any chance goodbye. He deserves it all as he made his bed.

Mark Davis just did this to take the focus off his other problems.

Some knuckle drafters are losing their minds that some an got a tryout. What does that say about them. Kap was a very good QB and then played mediocre or poorly in his last two seasons. But his defense was giving up over 30 points per game and his coaches in those last two seasons were Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly. Who else was going to okay great with that D and those coaches? Let him tryout and if he is better than a backup and wants to take that spot, then let him. Why freak out?

Gee….you don’t say

Kaepernick did so well that no one has signed him. Lots of guys with strong arms can’t play QB. Kaepernick being one of them.

The number one thing to watch for is if Kap will take a one year deal at no. 2 or probably no. 3 QB money. Hasn’t that been the issue for the last 5 years? Several teams would have given him a $1M deal long ago if he agreed to accept it.

Look at the mess that Watson is in – much worse (although also very different) than CK kneeling – yet, look what the Browns paid Watson. In the NFL, if you have ENOUGH talent, almost everything is forgiven, if not completely ignored. If ANY team truly believed that CK could play and at a fair price- he’d have been signed years ago. It’s a multi-billion dollar sport – there is a litany of players who have done FAR worse than CK (keeping in mind what he did wasn’t even illegal) – and they may have sat out for a year, but were welcomed back. Why? Because….they had TALENT available at a reasonable price. Issue with CK is he’s thinking MILLIONS while the coaches are thinking, hmm, half a sandwich and a bag of chips.

Strong arm means close to nothing – reading a defense and progression is what matters. CK couldn’t read a defense years ago, wasn’t very accurate and was “primary receiver covered, time to run” – is there ANY reason to think in his time away that ANY of that is now better? And, shall we add in that defenses have seen TONS of running QBs since he played – there is NO novelty to his game.

Put him on the field and he’ll just get crushed – no matter his fitness or his arm strength. The owners and coaches KNOW this.

Now if the Raiders won’t sign Kap, that speaks volumes.

This is a fantasy, and it really needs to end. Are we going to be doing this when he’s 40? It’s absurd. He had his time. It didn’t work for: reasons. But it’s over. Let’s move on. He can still trade on his name and make a better living than 99.9% of the people posting comments.

I personally want Kap to get a shot, but it didn’t seem like McDaniel was really on board with this tryout. Hopefully he finds a better spot elsewhere if he wants to play, he’s better than a lot of QBs that are on rosters right now.

Don’t believe me, go look at the 2022 NFL QB All Depth Chart on Ourlads. Lot of no-namers, has-beens and never-weres in the 2nd-4th string range.

Raiders offered minimum and Kaep said how about $20 million.

NFL teams will sign a guy if they think he can help them win. PR usually takes a back seat. Vick and Watson come to mind. Kaepernick must not be good enough to overcome the distraction his signing would cause. He was beat out by Blaine Gabbert of all people. He’s not a great QB being black balled. He’s a mediocre QB that carries a ton of baggage.

The current articles on Kappernick are reminiscent of an old 50’s movie with Kirk Douglas called “Ace in the Hole”.

Pummer, difference between those no names, has bees, etc on Rosters and ck is the distraction factor and fan polarization issue.

Backups and 3rd stringers should be seen and not heard, do you think the mighty social activist will be happy with being seen and not heard? C’mon man

Blacklisted for kneeling? Really? It’s the NFL, you know, where wife beaters get second and third chances because they’re playmakers? If Kaepernick could play he’d be playing.

Blacklisted for sucking at playing QB.

Let’s say he gets his chance on a roster. Once there, how long before HIS personal agendas comes back into the scenario and football takes a back seat ???

There is no deal because it was just a way the owner could stick it to the other owners.

It’s not news at all that Kaepernick has the physical attributes of a world class athlete. So he can throw far and run fast. Too bad this ain’t Track and Field. My bet is that he can’t read a modern defense and can run very far through his progressions in the 1.8 seconds modern defenses will allot. He was already struggling at that back when he had the fallback of RPO scrambling, which NFL defensive coaches have long ago shut down.

So even if an owner would flip a finger at the rest of the NFL and consider signing him, why would they still do that when Kaep himself has declared that he won’t sign without a pathway to #1 QB at #1 QB pay even though he is not #1 QB material?

A more honest approach would be to accept a one-year deal and work himself into the #2 spot, getting lot of work in pre-season and 4th quarters. Then we get to 2023 and we can talk.

No tears for Kap. Made millions playing football activist. What a farce.

So your saying that it is iminent that he gets no deal , you will feel dumb if he does get a deal

People act like he wasn’t a huge part of a team going to the Super Bowl. He was still good enough to play in the league, and acting like Gabbert was better is hysterical.

My best is 60 and can still throw a football 70 yards through a brick wall. So?

Cleveland would be the perfect place for Kap, it would distract the fans from the knowledge that they signed Watson

Rg3 has almost the same physical characteristics of kaep same issues like reading a defense , feeling/evading pressure in the pocket without scrambling. Old rg3 can get a back up job but kaep can’t even tho he’s had years to heal up and in peak health for his age. Geno smith , nick mullens there are so many backups who I’ve seen play and are terrible and if kaep is terrible to he won’t make it through training camp.

Gruden would have signed him.

Hey, I heard the Lions want to sign Terry Bradshaw! Hes been out of the league for a few years, but I’m sure he can knock the rust off and really sling it to our newest WR, Jerry Rice!

When is football gonna go back to being about football and not a soap opera for men, I can’t take much more, it’s pitiful. The game has been infected by media agendas and political distractions, is there anything simple anymore? I love the game of football but it only accounts for 50% of what the NFL is about these days, it’s disgusting.

According to multiple sources, Kaepernick is still insisting on a guaranteed eight figure contract as he actually thinks he’ll be the starter come week 1.

Anyone who signs Kaepernick will upset their fan base and it will cost them money for years.

It’s not worth it for an average to below average QB who has been out of the game for years and has shown he’ll put his personal agenda before that of this team.

Those supporting him don’t want to be honest and talk about all the negative baggage he will being with him.

When he doesn’t get a contract, he’ll join the Flores lawsuit and claim discrimination.

As someone who feels he lacks talent, I hope he gets his shot so this argument ends.

All these Kaep haters are so triggered by anything about him. Man I hope Florio wishes this into existence and he gets signed to a team! Also, Kaep is about to take my Vikings to their second consecutive Super Bowl in Madden, just sayin’

At his best he never was a “good” QB, and considering his ego and childish behavior when he was benched. Then why is it so important to some in the media that he get another chance? He is kind of the same but opposite of Tim Tebow. Tebow was a great team mate (from what I remember), a good athlete, so so QB, and had way to much media / public noise everywhere he went. Kap is a poor team mate if he doesn’t get his way, a good athlete, an ok QB (better than Tebow, but not by much), has way way way to much media / public noise (that is probably even more disruptive than the Tebow effect). Seems that Kap is selfish, childish, an egomaniac, and a future problem that his skill just doesn’t offset. Maybe the media wants him playing (so so much) because they know the disruption that follows him will provide a lot of juicy stories that can be spun for their own personal and political agendas. The stories might actually be entertaining as well, train wreck entertainment, but at least better than the nonstop articles of how this guy is being mistreated. A mistreated millionaire at that.

Has he sued the Raiders yet for not signing him?

Colin would be the best QB in the AFC West. Just ask him. He’ll tell you.

He can help us at the end of games by kneeling down.

CK’s legacy will be a sad one. He’s not a difference-maker. He’s a narcissist.

If you settle on Colin, how can you sit Carr?

I find it interesting that the Raiders found time for Kaep shortly after Davis was accused of bad behavior

Surprised there has not already been the obligatory “I’m in the best shape of my life” quote from K7. If that is true, feel bad for the 49ers, who paid him $10s of millions when he wasn’t in as good of shape.

I would rather sign “Uncle Rico” than Kaepernick

A good franchise exists to win football games, that’s all I care about. The Bills stuck with Cole Beasley throughout his whole anti-mask stuff, but the moment he’s not the best option to win games, time to move on.

Personally if I’m a GM I don’t care much at all what fans think in the short term, I bring a guy in if he’s a good option on the depth chart and in the locker room. Raiders have decent QB depth with Mullens as the #2 and Stidham the #3.

End of the day, it doesnt suprise me that a Belichick disciple wouldn’t want to bring in a Kap. But maybe someone a bit more inclusive like a Mike Tomlin, Sean McDermott type would have a strong enough culture to keep him and the team focused on football during the season. We’re here to win Super Bowls end of the day.

You people are pathetic. the man broke no law, no rule set by his employer, he did what he has the God given right as an American to do and what we fought for, the right to express himself. It’s in the Constitution if you morons would take the time to read it.

Meanwhile, where is your Gabe Kapler hate for protesting the anthem or is this just a Black thing which is what we know it to be. Have to keep us in line.

Also, Kaep is about to take my Vikings to their second consecutive Super Bowl

Surely you must mean Joe Kapp, right?

No problem. Now he can work out for and sign for one of the other teams that were reported to be interested in him. With only 90 sports available it’s understandable there’s no room for him right now on the Raiders.

———— The Constitution doesn’t grant anyone the right to stage a protest at their place of work. Perhaps instead of calling others morons you should actually read it.

Florio is on record saying Kap stunk before he took a knee and the $20 million settlement. Guess Kaps girlfriend has spent all that money already cause he is coming crawling back!

Of Course Not, Don’t be Ridiculous!……
