Roses and Thorns - The Lima News

Plenty of roses are popping up after a week of ideal growing conditions.

Rose: To the people who served our country honorably but died along the way. They’re why we should remember Memorial Day.

Rose: To Angel Cortes, who will become the next Lima Police Department chief. He scored four percentage points higher than his competition, fellow major James Baker. We wish the future chief, who will be sworn in this week, the best of success in keeping Lima safe while transparently enforcing all of the laws.

Rose: To Lizzie Chung, who had two graduations this month, from Delphos Jefferson High School along with a biology degree from The Ohio State University. It’s an incredible achievement from an obviously brilliant local young mind.

Rose: To Jane Wright, of Harrod, whose idea was used in the nationally syndicated cartoon Pluggers. It will appear Saturday and focuses on a female plugger transitioning from knee-high socks to compression socks.

Rose: To Bob and Connie Sutherland, who are wrapping up 53 years in the swimming pool business with Shawnee Pools. It’s staying in the family, with Bob’s nephew Chad Stall taking over.

Thorn: To anyone trying to take political advantage of the shooting in Texas. Let these families grieve.
