In this episode of In The Know: Upcycled, fashion guru and DIY magician Wandy the Maker (@wandythemaker) shows you how to turn socks into super comfortable and unique shorts through this simple upgrade tutorial.

Step 1: Use a pair of shorts you already own to make your pattern

Wandy spreads a pair of fitting shorts on some patterned paper and leaves marks around them, leaving half an inch of seam on both sides. Do this for both the front and back of the shorts. After drawing the pattern, use scissors or a rotating device to cut it out.

Lay the socks flat, cut off the cuffs and legs of the socks, and separate the bottom of the socks from the top. Put the bottom of the sock aside and cut the leg pieces. You should do this for about 30 socks.

Step 3: Sewing the socks together

Sew your socks into a large sheet. Sew one at a time, and when you add to the sock belt, the right side of the sock faces together. A long strip should be the length of 6 socks. You should make about 5 such strips, and then sew them together to make a large square piece of paper. Repeat this process to make 2 sheets of paper. Wandy uses straight stitches with a quarter-inch seam allowance.

Step 4: Cut out your pattern

Put your shorts pattern on your socks and cut them out. Do this for both the front and back patterns of the shorts. At the end of this step, you should have a total of 4 panels.

Step 5: Sewing the short board

Fix the front panel and the rear panel together with the right side facing each other. Then, use straight stitches to sew them together. Do this for both legs of the shorts.

Flip one leg of the shorts to the right, then pass the other leg that is still from the inside out, aligning the inner seams. Then, staple them together at the seam and stitch them together using a straight stitch with a quarter-inch seam allowance. After sewing the inner seams, turn over the right side of the shorts.

Step 7: Create an elastic waistband

Using the remaining bottom of the sock, cut off the toes and heels. Then cut the sock tube to create a rectangular shape. Wandy used about 14 rectangular blocks in this step. Once he cut enough socks, he sewed them together into a long strip.

Step 8: Make a pattern for your belt

Using patterned paper, cut out a rectangle that is as wide as the top of the shorts and twice the height of the elastic.

Step 9: Cut out your belt pattern

Fold your garter belt in half, then place your waistband pattern on it, and place its end on the fold. Then, cut it out. Finally, stitch the open ends of the garter belt together.

Step 10: Sew the waistband to the shorts

Pin your waistband (facing to the right) on the top of the shorts, and then sew a straight stitch all the way to secure it. Then, fold the top of the waistband toward the shorts and sew it into a tube, leaving a 2-inch opening to insert the elastic. After passing the elastic band, stitch the open ends together to close the hole and complete your shorts!
